As the coronavirus continues to keep fans and artists alike locked inside, extra measures are being taken by performers to make sure that their fans get the right content at the right time. Now, pop superstar Sam Smith is giving their fans a peek inside the process behind those measures.

On Thursday (April 16), Smith joined Apple Music’s Zane Lowe via video for an at-home interview, where the two chatted about Smith’s upcoming projects.

The subjects of Smith’s new single with Demi Lovato, their postponed album, and the effect that life in quarantine is having on their process were all on the table.

«Music has taken a whole different shape, actually,» Smith said. «It really has. It’s really beautiful. It’s a really interesting time. I have written a bit the last few weeks, and it’s weird what comes out. It’s going to be a weird time.»

With the release of their new single «I’m Ready» with Demi Lovato on the horizon, Smith gave fans a quick teaser of what they can expect to hear. «It’s 2020 Abba, do you know what I mean?» they asked. «It almost sounds a bit musical theater at times. It feels cheesy at times. And I’m trying to own that because that is a genuine feeling that comes out sometimes in the studio and it’s fun. It’s really fun to go to that place.»

Smith also spoke about their recent decision to not only postpone, but rename their upcoming third studio album (originally titled To Die For). Smith told Lowe that the decision to make those changes «hasn’t been challenging,» and that they may make even more changes to the final product.

«I don’t even know if I’m going to put ‘Dancing With a Stranger’ on there, and ‘How Do You Sleep’ and ‘To Die For,’» they said. «I think might take them off and do something completely fresh and it’ll be a completely new album.»

Check out a clip from Smith’s interview with Zane Lowe, where they chat about everything from quarantine playlists to their adoration for Lauv.
